Keratoconus, Corneal Transplant, Intacts, CrossLinking, and Scleral Lenses

I had a corneal transplant early on in 2006, I believe. And because of the shape of the cornea was steep and the soft lenses or the hard lenses couldn’t fit the cornea shape, so that’s why I was told the only solution was the corneal transplant. So I had a corneal transplant in, as I said, 2007, 2006, and unfortunately, that corneal transplant in my right eye wasn’t successful. So I had to research the shape of the cornea again, but still I wasn’t able to achieve the vision that I was looking for. But eventually, with the scleral lenses now, I can see a lot better. So basically, I had a corneal transplant in my right eye, and also, later on, I had– recently, actually, I have a cross-linking and intacts on my left eye. I was told another cornea transplant from my left eye. And then, I was like, OK, just give it another try. So I went to California. Did my cross-linking and the intacts. Unfortunately, the vision wasn’t improved. So I was searching online and eventually, I found Dr. Azman Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland. He is a good doctor for scleral lenses. As I was told, this could improve the vision. And Dr. Azman he was very helpful and took the time in each patient. So we made a couple of visit to the office. I’m actually from Virginia. I came all the way from Virginia to Maryland because I was searching online he’s the only doctor I found. He could be a good help for scleral lenses.

I was diagnosed with Keratoconus about 15 years ago…now I’m comfortable driving at night and everything.

My name is Dustin. I am a patient of Doctor Azman’s. I was diagnosed with Keratoconus about 15 years ago with no clear path to solving it. I had one doctor in Michigan that I saw, and then through my work travels, I saw– also saw a doctor in New York, and wasn’t able to find a clear solution to my problem until I moved down to Maryland and contacted Dr. Azman online, and he reached out to me. Then together, formulated a solution and now I’m comfortable with full vision and driving and everything. I used to– be a point where I was barely passing a driver’s test with my contact gear with my glasses, and now with these contact lenses, I feel comfortable driving at night and everything.

Keratoconus Dry Eye Contact Lens Treatment

“I pretty much had eye problems since, I think it started when I was probably 9 or 10. So I’ve always had to deal with glasses, contacts, what have you. Over the years, it just got worse. And come to find out, probably about six, seven years ago, I found out that I had keratoconus. Been to numerous physicians, I’d probably say eight in the last seven or eight years. Nothing like what I find here with Dr. Azman.” Keratoconus Dry Eye Contact Lens Treatment.

The management of a disease called keratoconus

From the desk of Dr. Benjamin Azman:

I am very proud and passionate about what I do and I wanted to take a moment to share a story about my patient today and also explain to you what optometrists (eye doctors) do on a daily basis. We not only help restore vision to all kinds of patients, but every patient is given a full eye health exam, which includes looking for ( and often diagnosing) eye diseases as well as systemic health diseases ( diabetes, high blood pressure, tumors, etc.) We don’t just give you glasses to help you see, but we evaluate your eyes and your overall health. And very often we restore vision to people who are legally blind, save or prevent vision loss, and sometimes save lives.

One of my specialties is the management of a disease called keratoconus, which is where the front part of the eye, or the cornea, becomes extremely steep and thinned and causes blurry vision and visual distortions which glasses do not correct for. My patient today has had keratoconus for many years and has been struggling to see due to his loss of vision. As of today, he was officially legally blind with his vision being 20/400 ( barely able to see the big E on the chart). But today I restored his vision with the design of a custom scleral device/lens. This device acts as a prosthetic and recreates a smooth front surface on the eye. His vision went from 20/400 to 20/30 which is more than 10 x improvement in sight. He was very emotional and super excited to be getting his vision back. I see several patients a week like this and I enjoy each encounter and opportunity I have to help these people.

My Amazing Keratoconus Story Part 1: My Keratoconus Journey

Diagnosed with Keratoconus many years ago. Initially she was prescribed glasses, but still had problems with her vision. Many years later she was told about the options of intacts, and other things, but first had to have Crosslinking (CXL). She was referred to Dr. Azman who was successful with providing her with great vision!
