This patient has advanced Keratoconus and was diagnosed over 30 years ago. She has been to many doctors, including other keratoconus specialists and was never successfull. She has tried many types of lenses including RGP lenses. She traveled from over-seas to our office and has never been happier with her vision.
Dr. Azman works with each patient indivully to achieve sucessfull results
I have been wearing contact lens for 55 years. When I moved from out-of-state to Maryland, I needed to find a new contact lens specialist. I found Dr. Azman using a Google search. I was surprised to get a phone call asking me questions before getting an appointment. It turns out Dr. Azman specializes in problem cases. As I described my increasing discomfort and dry eyes, he said he could help.
I never had the tests he did for tear layer, the topography of cornea, etc. I discovered my contacts were not fitting properly causing an abrasion on both eyes. After two weeks of no contacts, the abrasion was healed. I was surprised when he suggested soft contacts. My previous doctor thought I couldn’t wear them after years with hard and then gas permeable lens. Switching to the soft lens was no problem. It took some adjusting of different strengths of the lens to get the correction for reading and computer work, but now I am very happy with the results.
I could not drive at night with contacts because of the extreme glare. That is gone. My eyes were very sensitive to light so I needed sunglasses all the time. That is gone.

I have advanced Keratoconus requiring special contacts which can be very difficult to fit. Dr. Irwin is without a doubt the most knowledgeable doctor I have seen in the 37 years I have had KC. When fitting me with contacts, the process cannot be rushed and Dr. Irwin did not rush, even though I had flown in from outside of the U.S. and only had 10 days to get things right. His staff was A+ and the whole experience was far above my experience with other nationally known U.S. doctors who treat KC.
If I was a regular patient without any unusual complications I would probably find a practitioner who accepts insurance or is less expensive. But my case is complicated and complicated is what this practice does best. While expensive, long term I have no doubt that Dr. Irwin has saved me money and given me many more years of comfortable vision, the latter being something other doctor’s were not able to do.

This patient lives in Richmond, VA and travels over 3 hours to visit our office. She had LASIK in 1999 and her vision and astigmatism were corrected. Over the past few years she has noticed the astigmatism returning with blurry vision and changes in her vision. After several visits with Dr. Azman she is now wearing customized scleral lenses and her vision has greatly improved!
This patient had Radial Keratotomy (RK) Eye Surgery around 25 years ago. The surgery was successful and he did not have to wear glasses for distance or reading for 20 years. About 5 years ago his vision started to give him problems; blurry vision, fluctuation of vision and other vision challenges. He has been to many eye doctors who were not able to accommodate his vision and comfort needs. Dr. Irwin Azman worked with this patients to design custom fitted scleral lenses. He is now able to return to his regular activities, play golf and drive his car safely.
Dr. Azman specializes in the treatment of Post RK Complications, Post LASIK Complications, Keratoconus and other irregular corneal conditions, and Dry Eye Treatment.
Dr Azman is a great man, humble and very honest. Things started between us as an official deals at the beginning and that was throw the phone calls but once I came to his clinic and met him things changed, he was like a big brother made sure he and his staff to comfort me and made me ready for all the tests. He changed my life totally, he told me you will my office this afternoon completely satisfied and he kept his word. I can say that I was born that day, I could see things in a different way. I saw the real colures for many things around me, it was my first time to wear lances and it worked out throw him. I became more confident now and happy about what Im seeing around me. Finally I could start my first step into my dream career to become a pilot. Although I passed the Ishtar plate in front of him but having my class 1 medical test singed by AIM was a felling I can’t talk about or explain here.
God bless you doctor and all your kind staff

5 star rating in each category!!!! After having dry eyes for almost 40 years, and being recommended to use over the counter eye drops (only clear advice to stay away from Visine), I never realized it is truly an eye disorder that no physician has ever addressed……until Dr. Tom.
When I phoned to inquire about the services and inquiring about insurance coverage, Dr. Tom returned the call personally & spend quite a bit of time in conversation. I made an appointment & was given several eye tests by Dr. Tom (only one test which was ever administrated before & without even a direction to proceed), all of which clearly outlined my present eye condition. Dr. Tom then formulated a plan to treat my chronic condition over several months. I am so grateful I looked for a practice dedicated to Dry Eye Disease and found this unique one. Dr. Tom goes overboard with compassion, caring & humor (even phoning from a remote location to check on my initial treatment results). I can not say enough about the staff – they make you feel very welcome at each visit and focus solely on you when you are working with them. Highly recommend The Dry Eye Institute!
I have been a patient of Dr. Tom for nearly 30 years and have never met any physician as committed to superior patient care as Dr. Azman. He is incredibly patient with each patient both in the office and on the phone. Recently, concerned with some test results, he insisted on me seeing a specific neuropthomalogist. He remembered the day my appt was scheduled for (a Thursday,) and called me the day after my appt approximately 8 times (between my cel and home numbers) to find out what the neuropthomalogists findings were – not satisfied to wait for her report. We kept missing one another but he finally caught me on Sunday afternoon!
